  1. It have been confirmed that PES is unable to sponsor the DLP program by Prof Enrique Ache we proposed early this year. Here's a recent reply from Prof Lalit Goel who was coordinating the program:
I regret to have to bring you some bad news - IEEE PES is unable to sponsor DLP Enrique Acha for the DLP series in your region. I am attaching the communication from PES, which should serve to explain their rationale in rejecting our request.
I think PES HQ prefers - increasingly - that we should employ the DLs from our own region for the DLP program rather than get somebody from other regions.
We can bring up this matter for discussion at the upcoming chapter chairs meeting in KL on Oct 24 and 25, 2009.
    Regards,
    Lalit Goel, PhD

  2. The good news is now there is no need to do a new petition to split the Joint NZ North/South PES/PLES chapter. The splitting has been approved, and we will have our separate PES/PELS chapter.
  3. A latest communication from R10 exploring alternate funding support form sections to make the DL happen. The communication received yesterday is as under:                                            Dear Chapter Chairs,
I have been discussing this issue with Dr Enrique Acha who is still keen on making the DLP presentations in R10. He tells me that he is willing to contribute, from one of his research accounts towards his airfare from say Glasgow-Singapore and Christchurch-Glasgow. Since the DLP speaker has generously offered to support part of his transportation expenses, now it is up to us to try and generate the rest of the transportation expenses (local expenses will in any case have to be borne by the local host chapter) to make this trip a reality.
May I suggest that all the 6 chapters chip in about USD500 each, so that we can generate a total of USD3000.00 which I think would be enough to cover the additional segments of Singapore-Bangkok-Hong Kong-Brisbane-Auckland-Christchurch (if the amount is less we will need a smaller contribution from each chapter).
    1. Singapore on Monday 7th December
    2. Bangkok on Wednesday 9th December
    3. Hong Kong on Friday 11th December
    4. Brisbane on Monday 14th December
    5. Auckland on Wednesday 16th December
    7. Christchurch on Friday 18th December
Can I have your thoughts on my proposal by this Friday, as time is short and we need to give the green signal to Dr Acha so that he can make the necessary travel arrangements?
    Best regards,
    Lalit
  4. Patrick would like to ask the committee if USD 500 support can be extended by our Section to make this DL happen?

  1. Patrick's apology for not being able to attend the coming committee meeting. He needs to attend an event organised by Engineering without borders.
  2. A PES DL program has been arranged for early Dec, but PES is considering to cut the budget so it is on hold now. Will update you if there is any further development.
  3. Apart from that, there is nothing to report from PES/PELS chapter from the last meeting.

  1. Prof Anjan Bose ran an IEEE DL workshop (two hours talk plus one hour round table discussion) on 'The Evolution of Control and Control Centres for the Smart Transmission Grid', 1-4pm, 24Nov 08 in Auckland, about 30 people attended the workshop. He also delivered the same talk (reduced to a one hour seminar) on 25 Nov 08 in Transpower Ltd, Wellington. The seminar attracted about 120 attendants so finally divided in two streams (9:30-10:30am and 12-1pm). Patrick was invited to accompany Prof Bose to Wellington to help organise the seminar and meet people there. The seminar was very well received and stimulated a lot of interests. Transpower sponsored both Prof Bose's and Patrick Hu's fights (Auckland-Wellington return) and accommodation.
  2. All four PES/PELS chapter activities in North Section this year, including this recent DLP in Auckland and Wellington, now have been reported online from:http://ewh.ieee.org/cgi-bin/l31/ReportForm.plWill contact NZ South to finish reporting the activities there.
  3. Six PES/PELS full members have signed the petition form in order to form a new NZ North PES/PELS Chapter, another six signatures are still needed.

9/10/2008

  1. PES/PELS ran a seminar together with ECE Dept on 2nd Oct 08. 15 people attended the seminar and 10 were IEEE members. The topic was 'Experience in Working for System Operator/Electricity Market' given by Dr Bhujanga Chakrabarti of Transpower Ltd. Have just done the on-line reporting (Form 31) from IEEE website.
  2. Have contacted A/P Neville Watson from Canterbury Uni many times to arrange a seminar by him, but we couldn't find a suitable time. He may do it when he comes up for a Ph.D oral examination end of this year or early next year. This will also help to reduce the cost involved.
  3. The date for Prof Anjan Bose's DL lecture has been confirmed: Monday 24 Nov 08. Transpower Ltd and Canterbury Uni both showed strong interest to have Prof Bose there, but because Prof Bose's time is very constrained he can only give the talk in Auckland. We are considering setting up a video conference to cover three venues.
  4. The petition for forming a new PES/PELS (North Section only) is in progress.
