This week, Drawing from Daudelin, M (1996)'s 4 stages of learning we are able thoroughly reflect upon the issues and resolution of problems this week.

Problem - The main issue that came across me, and our group this week was the absenteeism of our team members, As such, the group was left with only left with 4 members this week. Week 3 was a week where it was the first round of the official rollover, so this additional issue would've caused a bit more stress for the team.

Analysis- As a result of not being physically present, there were issues surrounding the communication aspect of the team, Operations and R&D were roles that were pretty important especially because the first competitive rollover required inputs that we had all individually done within the practise. With offline mode now gone, good communication and input is quintessential for team success.

Theory- According to Yukl (2013), there is a high level of respective dependance between managers and workers, thus an effective communication channel is very important for the team to be better off. This reflects how team co-operation and co-dependance is quite essential for all teams to be able to excel. From Yukl,  the importance of managerial roles is stressed within the reading, which made me grateful that our team CEO is able to reach out and help us each individually, demonstrating this communicative example which benefits both us and the team.
Action- As such, because of the absences i made sure i was updated on all the work of our members, - and was prepared to take on more work. Similarly, we used our chat channel as an effective means of communication where we were still able to share and talk about data.

  1. Tony Gu you've made a good run following Daudelin's structure. Let's see how we can take your learning journal to the next level.

    • Don't bother with your first sentence; you're starting point can be your problem statement. Do that will give you more words to play with in the meaty part of your learning journal.
    • In your problem statement, you've kind of mixed symptoms and causes. I can't quite tell if the problem is "too much work" (maybe because of missing members), or communication problems (maybe because people were dialling it in).  I'm going to guess its the latter rather than the former. Then your problem statement could be as simple as "I was unable to communicate with my team as well as I wanted to". That said, as Daudelin notes:

    During problem articulation, “what” questions allow one to fully describe the situation: “What occurred?” “What did you see, think, feel?” “What was the most important thing?” These questions are useful in arriving
    at a thorough understanding of the problem to be solved or the challenge to be addressed.

    • Analsysis: In this stage, you need to think about why things happened the way they did. What was it about people being absent that created the problem; was it poor on-line communication? was it that you went to asynchronous communication (e.g., exchanging emails). Was it that you couldn't pick up on when someone was sure (or unsure) about what they were saying. You need to dig into "the why"; there are plenty of virtual teams out there who never meet but still perform at very high levels.
    • Hypothesis; this is where you start to nail down which of the "whys" is the one (or maybe ones) that really matter (and maybe it is just your own theory that matters here rather than, say, Yukl's).

    Overall, you might want to re-read Daudelin, and her examples. 

  2. Hey Tony

    With the use of Daudelin's learning process you have really captured all the aspects of your problem this week with absent members in a great way that ended up in a smart solution and hopefully just as much success as if the whole team was physically there. Along with the appropriate use of Yukl (2013) in the dependance between all parts of the team for an effective communication channel which was acquired. Next time just read over your journal and check a few grammatical areas and maybe not titling each paragraph but instead just explain what part is being used during the topic sentence , but nothing major.

    This is a well structured learning journal. It is clear you can see the structure is very well done as you outlined it by heading each paragraph. I think one thing you could do is take out the title for each paragraph. Would make it look a little neater.
