Turn the power on \ [press power button\]
·         Change the power cable to a different outlet and restart
·         If the above does not resolve the issues notify the staff through email \ [following steps below\] or approach the Media Centre helpdesk on Level 2 and 4 for help.

When emailing the staff to notify them of problems with computers, please follow the following steps:
·         Step 1:Record the computer number \ [eg. UOA123456\]
·         Step 2: Give the approximate location \ [eg. Level 2 studio, first bay\]
·         Step 3: Give a simple description of the problem and screenshot of the error if possible
·         Step 4: Note any steps you have taken to address the issue
·         Step 5: Email this tocas-support@auckland.ac.nzwith the subject 'Computer Issues'

2.     The Mac computers in studio are over-heating frequently at present.  It is likely that your Mac machine is overheating if it is:
·         Processing slower than usual
·         Not working at standard capacity
·         Very hot to the touch (especially the back of the machine)In these cases, simply turn off you machine and let it cool down for 15-30minutes.

Introduction:

A major issue with digital design work, especially as you begin to become proficient with the machines, software and production pathways, will be centred on troubleshooting and sourcing sufficient support.

Trouble shooting Software Specific:

For software specific support it is suggested that you first port of call is the Help files located within or linked to the software itself.  The vast majority of the software reviews on this wiki has its own helpfiles.  Look for the Help or F1 button in the interface.  

Trouble shooting Common:

The following are a series of general and common computing problems and general troubleshooting techniques.

1.     Common Problems:
·         CD is not reading
·         CD is not writing
·         USB/portable hard drive is not reading
·         Program is not launching
·         Keyboard or mouse not responding
·         Screen is showing significantly different colours to normal (purple seem to be a favourite)
 ·        Not logging on
·         Cannot select printer/does not print

Steps to take if you encounter the above problems:
·         Restart the computer
·         Check the power plug is on/the screen adaptor is plugged in
·         Check the network cable is plugged in
·         Check the keyboard/mouse cable is plugged in

Lost Hardware:

If you lose or have stolen any hardware peripherals such as portable hard drives, USB cables, card readers, iPods, digital or video cameras make sure that you send a message to Media Centre/IT administration which includes your details, the computer at which you were working (look for the computer terminal number), location of loss, and the specific details of the problem and/or object in question.  This can be done by emailing cas-support@auckland.ac.nz.

Installing Software:

The school has encountered many issues with unauthorised installation of software on studio computers, and thus has recently implemented a system to revert operating system changes upon log off. Students also do not have the required administrator rights to make changes to the operating system so if you wish to install software to your machine in studio then you must have Media Centre and IT approval to do so. 
The first step is to take you program files for installation and all program information to the Media Centre office, at 317 Architecture Building.  It is necessary to bring you proof of license also.  Remember, that only freeware can be installed.  Paid licences are quite simply not installable by Media Centre to studio machines.  If you have a paid licence to a program that you would like to use either install it on your own private machine or send a request to Media Centre that a licence is purchased formally by the School.
