From the start of my degree back in Year 1, I was told of the importance of teamwork and how my future employers would be putting me into teams with other people to work with. As I moved up, doing second year and finally third year papers more and more papers had the element of team work embedded in them and we are often required to work in teams. My personal experience with teams wasn’t all bad, their mostly good experiences in which hardly any conflicts would arise in between us. For me, this can be from a combination of sheer luck that I get good team mates and how my involvement in my team would somehow shape how our team behaves.
Reflecting back on all the years of working in teams, last year was definitely the best. I did a yearlong paper which we had to work with a real company to produce a real working system. For me the experience was great because we had really awesome team dynamics which even other groups in our class would acknowledge. From day one of our group formation, we talked about our expectations, our personalities and our goals. Afterwards, we would also set aside time to like do stuff together such as going out to eat, doing crazy stuff, attending parties and events and so on. In the end, our team dynamics definitely paid off, we each had good results which I can dare say we owe to our team dynamics.
My experience definitely ties back to our readings this week as well as the themes/issues/ideas that was discussed in class this week. I believe conceptually, awesome team dynamics springs forth from commonality. As a team we must head towards the same direction and aim for the same goals. Certainly during the year we did ran into a few problems, such as slacking and differences coming up. We basically voiced our concerns when someone in our team is slacking: a form of peer review I would say, a check. Our team also put aside our egos for the sake of our goals. These ensure that we continue to set a common viewpoint as a team. The reading mentioned that having expectations set out early on ensures the effective functioning of the team, it also united all of us in terms of agreement. We also learnt that keeping our problems to ourselves would generally do more harm than good in the long run but once we start putting these problems on the table, most of them get resolved and it didn’t end up in an ugly mess.
Overall, from both my experiences and the extra reinforcement of the readings and discussions I have come to appreciate the importance of the establishment of commonality in a team in terms of realistic/achievable targets or goals and the direction of where we will be heading. The commonality helps to shape and mould team dynamics as well. This means that for my team with MikesBikes we would aim to establish each of our expectations which we have done so today. Hopefully, this will prove that it would lead to an effective team and we would all get to achieve our goals/targets.
