Prior to sitting down to commence this weeks learning journals I had a scan over each of the weekly readings. Initially, I was more interested in “Learning and Developing from Managerial Work Experiences” (Davies & Easterby-Smith, 1984)” because my team had another dismal week with a decrease in shareholder value (SHV) and I hoped Davies and Easterby-Smith (1984) will be able to help me decipher the best way to move forward. Unfortunately, I found this to be an incredibly dull read but luckily “Skills of an Effective Administrator” (Katz, 1955) was more interesting and actually quite helful in this weeks reflection process.

Let me start by setting a context and describing how my week went: Last week was the first time that we saw our SHV drop, and although it dropped significantly I was not especially worried because there were still some upsides to our results; along with this I thought we were able to successfully identify where we went wrong and correct those mistakes. Now that we have experienced a second decrease in SHV I am not only more frustrated, but also more worried. Kanz (1955) declares that there are three things that make an effective administrator.

  1. Sufficient technical skill to accomplish the mechanics of the particular job
  2. Sufficient human skill in working with others to be an effective group member and to be able to build cooperative effort within the team
  3. Sufficient conceptual skill to recognize the interrelationships of the various factors involved in the situation

(Kanz, 1955)

When analyzing this criteria with my group I think that any one of us could meet the two initial requirements, however, the third becomes problematic. I know I as an individual am struggling to comprehend how each aspect of MikesBikes fits together and I believe my other team members are in the same situation. I think that this week is going to be a crucial rollover in determining our end success; therefore, we will have to spend a lot of time analyzing and brainstorming which factors effect what and how we can best make progress for the week ahead.

Although I do currently have some ideas in my head, I will end the journal here due to the competitive nature of MikesBikes and not wanting to give any other team an advantage, especially as we need all that we can get for this next rollover!

    It is good to see that you have grasped onto the concepts illustrated in the readings, and attempted to apply it to your own personal experience. Your reflection on the past week was something I could empathised with, as my team are in a similar situation. I guess you could just see it as room for development for the next turnover, because that's the purpose of MikesBikes right? To learn from mistakes and work to figure it out. Overall it was a good reflection, but something you could work on is to talk about your personal challenges and potential ways you could over come them.
