2) ComSoc news on Global Communications Newsletter
Being an active IEEE Joint NZ North/South ComSoc Chapter we had organised several workshops and distinguished lecturer (DL) talks in New Zealand last year. We also won the ¿Best Chapter Achievement Award¿ in 2012.The article highlights the professional development activities for the member of the wider university community through IEEE ComSoc DL programme in New Zealand. These events were very effective and had generated a lot of interest among staff/students for further discussion. The article has been published in September 2013. Click on

1. ComSoc DL Funding application: I had a correspondence with Ewell Tan (Co-ordinator, Asia-Pacific ComSoc office in Singapore) earlier regarding ComSoc DL programme for this year. There is an uncertainty in DL funds for this year. We need to wait until further notice from IEEE ComSoc Region 10.
2. IEEE Region 10 Activity Funds: I would like to apply for funds to run a community involvement activity such as workshop/tutorial for school kids. This will generate a lot of interest among young kids about the global IEEE in general and IEEE NZ North section in particular. Any help from Section Chair would be much appreciated.

1. I have sent an article to the editor of the IEEE Global Communications Newsletter (GCN) by summarising professional activities especially Prof Asatani's visit to NZ last year (DL Lectures).
2. Prof Harsha Sirisena (from NZ South Section) is our IEEE joint NZ N/S ComSoc Chapter Chair for this year. However, I will continue to serve on the North section committee as ComSoc representative this year. I will work with Harsha for joint activities such as workshops and DL programmes this year.

IEEE NZ ComSoc report for 27 September 2012 Meeting
1. AUT hosts 2012 IEEE NZ Wireless Workshop
AUT¿s School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences (Network and Security Research Group) hosted a day-long IEEE NZ Wireless Workshop (mini conference) on Friday 31st August 2012. This annual event brought together more than 65 engineers, researchers, industrialists and policy makers working in the field of wireless communications and network technologies. The day consists of a series of presentations from participants, including keynote, industry, wireless research centre, and academy presentations with ample opportunity for informal discussions and networking.
The organising chair Dr Nurul Sarkar received positive feedback from attendees indicating that it was a highly successful event at AUT. The next year¿s Workshop will be hosted by Victoria University of Wellington.
2. IEEE ComSoc Chapter Achievement Award
IEEE NZ North and South ComSoc Chapter has been selected for 2012 IEEE ComSoc Chapter achievement award. Only 4 chapters out of 216 have been selected winners of this year's ComSoc Chapter achievement award world-wide. This is a significant achievement for us says chapter chair Dr Sarkar. We work hard over the years, conducted various activities for the members of the wider community, and communicated well with the central IEEE ComSoc headquaters in the USA as well as Asia Pacific office in Singapour. The award contains a plaque and honorarium ($1,000) for each recipient.
3. IEEE ComSoc DL Tour
Nurul Sarkar nominated Professor Koichi Asatani (from Japan) for IEEE ComSoc Distinguished Lecturer (DL) tour to New Zealand. Prof Asatani will give three lectures in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington on November 19, 21 and 23, respectively. In Auckland, he has been scheduled to give a talk on Monday 19 November (Venue: WF303, Business Faculty Building, Cnr of Wakefield Street and Mayoral Drive, AUT University Wellesley Campus, Auckland CBD). Please contact Dr Nurul Sarkar (nurul.sarkar@aut.ac.nz) for more details.

Fortunately IEEE ComSoc member Dr Pawel Dmochowski from Victoria University of Wellington will be attending the ICC conference. He has kindly agreed to attend the meeting and briefly discuss ComSoc activities in New Zealand.

Here is the report from the Joint NZ North/NZ South IEEE Communications Society Chapter:
***********************************
This year¿s IEEE New Zealand Wireless Workshop is scheduled to be held in Christchurch on Friday 26 August. The date was set before the devastating 22 February earthquake in Christchurch. The planned venue for the Wireless Workshop is the University of Canterbury. At this stage the Wireless Workshop is still planned to go ahead in Christchurch. The date selected for the Wireless Workshop aligned with a mid-semester break in the second semester at the University of Canterbury. It appears that the second semester dates have not been altered following the earthquake and the Wireless Workshop should proceed as originally planned.

IEEE/IET/IPENZ event:

Subject: Ultra-Fast Broadband - Why They Will Come Once we Build

Speaker : Ernie Newman - ex CEO of Telecommunications Users Group
Synopsis

Ernie Newman will talk about the evolution of the Internet; its current impact on our lives, and his prognosis for the next decade or two. He'll review where the social and economic returns will occur between now and 2025
- which are the sectors with most to gain, and where the real opportunities will arise from a development perspective. As a passionate believer in the crucial importance of connectivity, he'll explain why New Zealand has more to gain from ubiquitous connectivity than any other nation on earth, and more to lose if we don't get ahead of the game.

  • The 2010 IEEE New Zealand Wireless Workshop will be held in Wellington on Friday 27 August. Alan Coulson from Industrial Research Ltd will take the lead in coordinating the event, which will probably be held on IRL's premises in Gracefield, Petone. The date was chosen to avoid clashes with research project exhibitions at Victoria University (3 September) and the University of Auckland (10 September). (In 2009, when the event was held in Auckland, there was a clash with the Victoria University event.)
  • Alan Coulson <A.Coulson@irl.cri.nz> will soon be issuing a call for participation in the 2010 Wireless Workshop at which speakers from academia, industry and government present and discuss issues related to the design, implementation and use of wireless systems.
  • Planning has advanced for the Asia Pacific Communications Conference and ATNAC which will be co-located in Auckland this year (31 October - 3 November at the Langham Hotel). Paper submissions are due shortly. Accepted papers will eventually appear on IEEExplore.See:http://apcc2010.aut.ac.nz/and http://atnac2010.aut.ac.nz/

Discussions are still in progress on splitting NZ ComSoc Chapter and forming a NZ North Chapter. However this requires sufficient ComSoc membership in NZ Central and South Sections for them to remain viable.
